2026 March – Swiss Intellectual Property Office – Swissness

The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) has clarified its practice regarding the use of the Swiss cross in relation to indications of origin.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) has clarified its practice regarding the use of the Swiss cross in relation to indications of origin. Companies whose products no longer fully meet the Swissness criteria (for instance, due to production abroad) may now use the Swiss cross in expressions such as SWISS RESEARCH or SWISS ENGINEERING. This is allowed only if the symbol does not suggest that the entire product is of Swiss origin. The cross must appear precisely between the two words, with a side length no larger than the font size. This adjustment aims to help export-oriented firms highlight the Swiss quality of their research or development operations. The new rule is effective immediately, subject to any specific sectoral regulations.
